Subject: [*] 3d Brick Bash! v1.1
3d Brick Bash! is a three-dimensional version of the old break-out game.
Version 1.1 replaces previous versions.
It requires: Color Quickdraw, System 6.0.5+ or 7.0+, 68020 CPU or greater,
and 1,300K free memory to run in 256 colors (only 800K for 16,4, or 2 color).
New features: enhancements to make levels progress faster...
you can influence the ball speed, start play on any level previously
reached, and random targets appear from time-to-time which award goodies.
The ball generally moves and accelerates faster than before (unless you
turn this off.)
Not least, several bug fixes and an address change, too.
Shareware. *Free for users who registered for previous versions.*

Subject: [*] 3d Paddle Bash! v1.04
3d Paddle Bash! is a 3d version of pong, with customizable computer
opponents.
Described in passing by Compuserve Magazine (10/93, p.55) as "a wonderful
implementation of Pong..." Version 1.04 replaces earlier versions.
It requires: Color Quickdraw, System 6.0.5+ or 7.0+, 68020 CPU or greater,
and 1,000K free memory to run in 256 colors (700K for less; works fine in
16, 4, or 2 colors.)
1.04 has no major differences from 1.03 (though my address changed), but it
DOES fix several problems of version 1.0. Players with v.1.03 don't need this
update, unless they plan on redistributing the files.
Shareware (free to users who registered for a previous version.)

Subject: [*] crlf.sit.hqx
[Archived] please find a Sit&Hqxed file of CRLF.
CRLF is a drag & drop application which performs
the conversion of CR(Mac), LF(Unix) and CRLF(PC) files. It
auto-detects the end of line code of the file which was
dropped and converts to the desired file type. Once you
have set up the preference, you will rarely need to make
any interaction with CRLF later.
CRLF converts the file "in place". The filename stays the
same before and after the conversion. You will notice that
it was converted just by looking at the icons. You can
set up these icons by specifying the creator for each type
of output file.
Also, CRLF is capable of dealing with Japanese text, unlike
some other similar utilities.
This is a freeware.

Subject: [*] Default Folder 2.45 Submission
Following is the latest release of Default Folder, version 2.45. It fixes
a bug which caused the rebound feature and folder history to occasionally
stop working. It also adds the ability to switch and modify link sets from
within a file dialog.
Default Folder is a control panel device that allows you to set up default
folders for specified applications and desk accessories (good for use with
file launching utilities, and launching an app that's sitting on the
desktop). It also provides a pop-up menu in the standard file dialog for
navigating between often-used folders and disks, and provides a "rebound"
feature which reselects the last file you chose in a file dialog. Default
Folder is shareware, and is uploaded as a compact pro archive.

This is version 1.0.1 of the Eric's Ultimate Solitaire Demo from Delta
Tao software. It plays Eight Off which is one of the 17 solitaire
games that the full version offers. It supports color and b&w and has
lots of great features. You can move cards by dragging, double
clicking, and "throwing." To throw a card you give it a flick towards
a target and let go. Then it'll fly in a nice arc to the destination.
Other features include unlimited undo/redo, statistics, and what we
like to call "Weasel flavor." The artwork is by Howard Vives the same
artist that drew everything for Spaceward Ho!
That's it... Eric's Ultimate Solitaire demo is for free distribution
only. The retail price of the full version is $59 and is available
>From the big mail order places or from Delta Tao directly. Delta Tao's
number is (800) 827-9316 or (408) 730-9336.
If you are a registered user of one of my shareware games (Forty
Thieves, Baker's Dozen, and Montana) then you can upgrade to Ultimate
Solitaire for $25.

Excerpt from the Intro:
The basic premise behind LabMaster is to simplify the job of programming
client-server software in a networked environment. The core of LabMaster is
a network transportation system that allows code on a client Mac to easily
communicate with code on a server Mac. A whole range of features can be
implemented with little programming overhead and minimal knowledge of the
underlying AppleTalk network. Each required feature is implemented as a
LabMaster module. A module performs a specific function either
independently or in cooperation with other modules. LabMaster can load
these modules at any time and interacts with them through a well defined
programming interface.

Note to 16MHz users: The new version uses a bit more processing

This is the third release version of the Texx scripting interpreter.
This scripting language is an attempt to implement a version of the

operating system. This version of Texx is far from a full implementation,
so don't think that you can copy your CMS execs and run them on your Mac.
This is a very minimal implementation, however, it still adds additional
functionality to the Mac OS. My plans are to keep updating Texx and
hopefully it will mimic the mainframe version very closely.

Subject: [*] the MACS 1.0b5
the MACS is a freeware application which displays a large number of specs for
all Macs that have ever been released. For a more thorough description, see
the help included in the application.
the MACS supports all Macs from the Plus up and all Systems from 4.1 up.
In October Apple introduced no fewer than *sixteen* new Mac models! That's
more models than they introduced in Macintosh's first 7 1/2 years. the MACS
1.0b5 has entries for all the new *non-Performa* models: LC 475, Quadra 605,
610, 650, and 660AV, Duo 250 and 270c, Macintosh TV, and Color Classic II.
The Performa 410, 460, 466, 467, 475, 476, and 550 will be added soon.
The other improvements in version 1.0b5 are:
-Filled in the empty "Speedometer speed" field for as many Macs as I could,
and provided display and Search support for this field
-Divided Help into bite-sized sections, with a pop-up menu to select them
-Added more Help info
-Fixed an incompatibility with LaserWriter Driver 8.x
-Many minor changes, spec additions/corrections, and bug fixes
Thanks to the many people who have sent me corrections and suggestions!
This is still a beta version of the MACS. I don't have all the specs yet;
some info is quite difficult to find. I would really like for people to send
me bug reports, corrections, specs I don't have, and suggestions.

Subject: [*] Universal Card Copier
This is the first posting of the Universal Card Copier,
a HyperCard stack/utility that makes cutting and pasting cards
>From one stack to another real easy.
You can copy a whole stack, only marked cards, or you can select
the cards you want from a list of card names/ids. You can paste
them anywhere you want in the stack you are copying to.
(e.g. at the beginning, the end or at any point you specify)
WARNING/discalimer: This is not the be-all, end-all of stack
merging utilities! ALWAYS SAVE a copy of the stack you are
copying cards INTO BEFORE attempting to copy any cards into it.
This stack uses the HyperCard Menu commands of "Copy Card" and
"Paste Card" just as if you were doing it manually. This may
or may not be what you want to do when you say you want to
"merge" two stacks. If the stacks are dissimilar and you paste
a card(s) from one stack into the middle of a different stack,
you can break the stack you are copying to since hypercard will
create a new background in the middle of the stack and this may
cause some scripts to not work correctly.
This stack is freeware and may be distributed freely by any and
all non-profit groups.
Hope someone finds this useful...

>Steve Tripp, ci52@ukanvax, ci52@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu
Error T114 is "Expected stack here". Somewhere in a script something is
expecting to see stack and sees something else. You must be using the Player,
because full versions of HyperCard do not give these code phrases. If you
have
a full copy of HyperCard and a copy of ResEdit you can look these error codes
up. Inside HyperCard, in STR# resource number 132 named "TalkErrors" are all
of the English expansions of these error codes. Just take the number
following
the T and find the string in the STR# that has the same number.
If someone who is more adept at resource manipulation than I am would write a
little utility to extract all of those error messages into a nice little text
report it would probably be useful to folks who are stuck with the Player.

Subject: Anybody successfully registered MAZ? (Q)
Dear Info-Mac Community
A bit more than one year ago I 'registered' MaxAppleZoom 1.43 by sending
the author (Naoto Horii in Bruxelles) the usual registration form and the
amount of $25.- in cash. I never received an answer, but this didn't really
bother me - 'til the appearance of MAZ 1.44. This latest version finally
allowed me to enjoy the benefits of MAZ with my Apple 8.24 video card
(version 1.43 refused to work with newer Apple 8.24 video interfaces).
Great! - but...
With the latest version of MAZ Naoto Horii obviously included some code
that makes MAZ display a note at - say - every tenth startup telling the
user he needs to register MAZ in order to get a code that suppresses the
nagging message at startup.
Well, I wrote N. Horii a kind snail-mail letter, asking for this secret
code (for free - since I paid for the software), but again I didn't get an
answer.
So I'd like to ask you a) if anybody successfully managed to register MAZ
(any version) and b) if anybody actually received the code needed to patch
version 1.44.
Any reply would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Subject: A Sound Question...
Hello, everybody!
I am writing a sound editor, and I need to work directly with the sound
samples, I don't have to just pass some data to SndPlay. The problem is
this:
I noticed that, when the sound is an 8-bit 'snd ' resource, samples are,
as for the wave table synthesizer described in Inside Mac, stored in
such a way that the 'zero' or 'silence' value is 0x80, and the lower
limit of the waveform is 0x00, and the upper limit if 0xFF.
But, when it comes to 16-bit sounds, the 'silence' or 'zero' value is
0x0000, and then, treating every sample as a signed short integer, the
upper limit is 0x7FFF (
32767) and the lower limit is -32768.
The 16-bit way of storing samples is the same for 'snd ' resources and
for AIFF files, whereas 8-bit AIFF files don't store samples in the same
way as 8-bit 'snd ' resources, instead they store them in the 16-bit
way, i.e. like signed chars: silence is at 0x00, then
127 is the upper
limit and -128 is the lower limit.
I also noticed that all this is consistent with what SndPlay plays. I
mean, I have to pass sounds stored in the described way to SndPlay for
them to play correctly. I can't get the data from an 8-bit AIFF file,
add a sound header and then play it with SndPlay: I need to convert all
the samples first, so that 0x80 becomes the middle (silence) value, 0x00
the lower limit and 0xFF the upper one.
Do you know if there is a way to pass data to SndPlay so that I can keep
8-bit sounds always in such a format that 0x00 is the middle (silence)
value?
Have you had any experience with 24-bit or 32-bit sounds? What if the
sampling size is not a multiple of 8 bits, i.e. 12 bits? Do you know
what are the silence, lower and upper limit values in these cases?
I couldn't find an answer to these questions in Inside Mac VI...
Thanks a lot!
Best,
- Alberto Ricci.

Subject: Attach printers to apps?
Here's an odd one. A friend has some clients who have three
printers, a networked LabelWriter, a networked StyleWriter, and
a laser printer of some sort. They want to be able to have
certain apps, like their address database, always print to the
LabelWriter or one of the other printers, and they don't want
to have to remember to switch the printer before they print or
after they print, which rules out macro use.
I can't offhand think of any way to do this without them at
least being conscious of which printer is the selected one.
Forgetting to change the printer is a big deal, since letters
then print to the LabelWriter, etc.
Any ideas? Will QuickDraw GX help with this specific problem?

So:
1. Will the installer only replace the older stuff?
2. Also, are other patches installed that aren't as obvious and do these

3. Finally, is the Sound Manager routines built into the AV? (I assume so

what I had tried to write Christian.
Prefs files can get corrupted and cause a utility to crash. You have
set things up so that your system is running w/o utility and you can delete
the corrupted files while retaining the utility that utility will regenerate
uncorrupted prefs files (without the work you put into informing the
older other corrupted prefs file, of course).
Instead of moving utility out of systems folder, you might have simply
started with the shift key down and disabled all extensions. Then, you
would have
1. rapidly started up without waiting for the init parade
2. bounce into your apple menu'd aliased pref's folder
and
3. you could delete the prefs and wind up where you are now, stable as a
rock.
4. for prefs with valuable information in them, like shortcuts that has
frequently accessed folders in it, I sometimes back them up with a bunch
of alias folders to help me in the apple menu.
Hope this clarifies a bit more what is going on right and what more
could be done.

It definitely sounds like a MacTCP DNS problem. I don't know about
the specific bugs in 1.1.1, but it's possible that 2.0.4 would help.
The main thing I would try is configuring the DNS part of MacTCP like
this.
machine.domain 130.90.111.111 (o)
. 130.90.111.111
. 140.234.234.234
Those number are completely fictitious, replace them with your nameserver's
IP address. The second nameserver address (the third number) is your
backup nameserver - your sysadmin should be able to tell you of two
of them. The dots instead of the names? It has something to do with
queries outside of the domain listed in the first box, beyond that
I don't really understand it. People over in comp.sys.mac.comm are
good at this sort of thing.
So, in summary. Make sure the first two numbers are the same, make
sure that the first one is the default, and make sure to put the dots
in.

Hi everyone. I run a network with aging machines: SE's, II's, IIcx's,
IIci's, IIsi's, a IIfx file server, and Centri. On my older machines,
though, I've still got 20 meggers and 40 meggers, and the largest
Apple-purchased drives I've got are 80 meggers.
I will be moving to Word 6 and Excel 5 once they are bundled into the new
version of Office, and I'm thinking to myself "Hmm. Word is going to be a
monster. How am I going to fit it on the disks?" I've already lost two
20's to stiction, so I'm thinking about replacing most of my internal
drives next year.
For two workstations, I've already gone ahead and purchased 170MB LaCie
internals because the price was good and I had been satisfied in the past
by their externals. But other people have steered me clear of LaCie,
saying that they are Quantum's B-level drives that fail the first tier of
quality assurance.
So, what kind of hard drives should I buy? Has anyone had experience with
other companies for volume purchase agreements? I'm looking to buy
somewhere in the neighborhood of 50, so please let me know. And how much
is enough? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Subject: LC -> LC 475: mystery deepens
I took MacWeek's advice and "asked David Ramsey" whether an LC -> LC 475
upgrade could be cobbled together from the logic board for the LCII/III
upgrade, together with a new power supply (many people had suggested that
the reason there is no LC upgrade is that the LC's power supply isn't
robust enough).
DR replied almost immediately (!) to the effect that as far as he knows the
power supply in the LCII is the same as that in the LC. Therefore the power
supply can't be the reason there's no upgrade being offered. He included
the following exceprt from the developer notes on the differences between
the LC and the LCII:
* The Macintosh LC II uses a 68030 processor rather than the 68020 used
in the Macintosh LC.
* The Macintosh LC II comes standard with 4 MB RAM soldered to the main
logic board, while the Macintosh LC has 2 MB soldered down. Both computers
support a maximum of 10 MB RAM.
* The Macintosh LC has a second internal floppy disk connector for the
addition of a second (optional) 1.4 MB Apple SuperDrive. The Macintosh LC II
does not support additional internal or external floppy disk drives.
* The Macintosh LC II microphone kit does not include a phonograph
adapter plug.
* The Macintosh LC II uses a slightly modified version of the Macintosh
LC case.
No mention of power supply changes. Bearing in mind that you can upgrade an
LC to an LCII, can anyone see anything in this list that would explain why
you couldn't put an LCII-LC 475 upgrade board in an LC and expect the thing
to work?

we have a hp 4M hooked up via local talk to a centris 610.
the centris is also physically connected to the campus ethernet, but in
order to print we don't keep it on ethertalk.
we'd like to be able to print to the hp 4M from the other two computers in
our lab (a centris 610 and quadra 610) and to keep the first centris on
ethertalk. I know a software bridge will allow this, but then the printer
will show up on the network and the business office will charge us for a
full ethernet hookup (thats the policy).
so, are there bridges that let you make the printer visible to only a few
specific computers. Any suggestions welcome, also for bridges in general.
thanks.

Subject: Logitech mouse turns itself off
Logitech makes a 3-button mouse, called the MouseMan, that works very well
for X Windows, e.g. with MacX. Their current version of the driver, 1.11,
has a problem with turning itself off periodically, so that the mouse key
mappings are lost; when this happens, the left button still behaves like a
regular Mac mouse. I've called Logitech about this a few times, and they
say they haven't pinpointed the cause, but that things like extension
conflicts and context switching appear to affect it; in my case, for
instance, rapid and frequent switching between two of my applications
(doing copy and paste) seems to cause it. They say a new driver is being
released in a few months, but they don't know if it will fix the problem.
I'd like to encourage anyone who has a Logitech mouse and who has
experienced this problem to call their technical support number at
510-795-8100. If enough people express concern about this, perhaps it will
be fixed (at least, assuming it's really a problem with their driver, and
not with something else).

I already received the following reply from Synergy. Sounds like a

wrong with the wrap width on VersaTerm Link; apparently the fixed wrap works
better with Info-Mac. A previous mail client I was using had an 80 column

Dave,
Link wraps at 72 to 76 characters if no carriage returns are encountered
prior to this point in the string. I talked to the programmer and he told
me to add a request to our "Requested Features" file to allow users the
ability to specify a wrap or to specify no wrap. He will seriously consider
adding this in the next version.

I'm happy to announce the availability of an application for displaying

Subject: Rodney King & LA Riots QuickTime movies available
I have 2 sort-of-related QuickTime movies that I'm making available
*temporarily* via anonymous ftp.
The first is of George Holliday's home video of the Rodney King beating.
It runs about 1 min 15 seconds at a frame size of 200x118 at a frame
rate of 10fps. Uses Cinepak compression, 256 grayscale (it's not color,
so I'd suggest switching your monitor to display gray scales when
watching the movie). It has no audio track. It's about 3.3 Mb.
The second piece is called "LA '92" It's a QuickTime movie I put
together from clips of local news coverage during the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
I had left my VCR on for about 18 hours over the span of 3 days,
recording various local TV channels during most of the riot. Back in
October, I quickly scanned through the tapes, digitizing interesting
bits of video, and added a classical music sound track (Delibes'
Lakme - Viens, Mallika...Dome epais). Runs about 1 min 24 sec at a
frame size of 200x150. Uses the Cinepak video compression (16-bit color).
It has an 11 Khz audio track. It's about 5 Mb.
The movies are available via anonymous ftp *temporarily* from Netcom in the
directory /pub/jaimev. For space reasons, both files will be deleted
after Friday, Nov 10.
The Rodney King movie is broken into 3 binhex files: rodney_king_1.hqx,
rodney_king_2.hqx, and rodney_king_3.hqx. Unbinhex them and then use
Stuffit Lite to join the 3 segment files together to form the movie.
LA '92 is broken into 4 binhex files: la_92_1.hqx, la_92_2.hqx, la_92_3.hqx,
and la_92_4.hqx. Unbinhex them and then use Stuffit Lite to join

Yes. SetupPartitions allows **hard** (as opposed to soft)
partitioning. You no more need Silverlining, HDT, or other third-party
formatters in order to "hard" partition your drive.
You still need Apple HD SC Setup, but since every Mac user can freely

Subject: System 7 family flag
Hi,
I'm very fond of Macintosh since the beginning. This means also that I'm very
interested in modifying or implementing what is still missing to MacOS :
multi-
user features !
When Apple released System 7, I was wondering why they9ve added a family
Finder
flag and what applications could do with this flags. The only utility that I
know for using this flag is Auto Doubler from ??? this CDEV compresses files
automatically when they9ve not be modified since xx/xx/xx, except if you set
their family flag to something different from "none" and ask Auto-Doubler not
to
compress these 3flagged2 file !!! In my idea, Apple could have given this
family
flag an other sense in MacOS : owner9s protection. Used in conjunction with
AppleShare9s users, one could have expected a kind of 3local file sharing
system2 in which you could give read-write-execution priorities to
family/owner
3flagged2 files or folders. On setting a family/owner flag for a file or a
folder, the password entered in the 3User and Groups2 CDEV, could have been
asked to the user. Same of course when a user wants to open such a 3flagged2
file or folder from either the Finder or another applications. Even if an
application is not written to handle this flag, it should be able to ask the
Finder to check for it before processing any further.
My question is how can I know if such a project is already studied by Apple or
by a team of developpers ? Is there a released System planned including such
multi-user features ? Where to get these informations ? APDA ? Maybe here...
I'm not a developper and such a nice project goes too far for me !
Quite a similar question comes to my mind when I think about the coming
PowerPC
chips inside Macintoshes... is System 7 going to be fully multi-user ? Is
Apple's System 7 just going to be the File/Window Manager of a modified Unix
system like the one of Carnegie Mellon ? If System 7 is kept, I guess
multi-user features are going to be implemented, but where and how ? That's
not
so secret at all, but it's worthy ! Can you give some informations ?
Last question about System 7 family flag... in which struct does it appear ?
Thanks for any reply !

a lot. Instead, I am looking for something that works off-line on the file
and maybe displays a progress bar for the process.
Is there anything of this sort in the archives? Elsewhere?
Thanx.

Subject: Upgrading a LC to use a SuperDrive
I have an old LC, I also have an old SE that I don't use. The SE has a
high density drive, while the LC has an 800K drive. I would like to transplant
the drive from the SE to the LC. Will this work? Do I need a ROM upgrade?
Is such a thing available???
I know, I know, this is, at best an obsolet configuration that I shouldn't be
wasting my time on anyway, but you gotta work with whatcha got!

Al,
>From your discription, it sounds like you want to run AppleTalk via two
seperate medium, Ether and LocalTalk. This is not possible. Your Mac wants
to talk one form of AppleTalk at a time. It can either be EtherTalk or
LocalTalk. That's what you choose in your Network control panel.
As to the solutions from Apple and Farallon. I do not believe that Apple or
Farallon have any software solution that will allow for the above. There
are 3rd party devices that will allow LocalTalk printers be shared on a
EtherTalk network, that may be what you're looking for, for your printer.
As to your PowerBook, Apple definitely do not have a software solution to
your delima. Farallon on the other hand do have their new EtherWave
products that will offer one of many solutions. Farallon's EtherWave device
for the PowerBook will not be available until the end of the month. You
should look at other solutions to your PowerBook. Like the ones from
Asante, Dyna, Focus, etc., before deciding on Farallon's solution. Even
Farallon themself has alternatives to the EtherWave.
Be prepare to spend some time with this.
Good Luck!

If that's all you want ethernet for it's quite easy. Telnet, which is free of
charge from the usual archives, will talk to the VAX down the ethernet card
even if the rest of the MAC is using the Appletalk port. No extra anything
required. :-)
That's how I'm using it, and also to talk to a VAX.
*HINT* If any one at Apple is reading this, I'd like the ability to use both
networks to be in the next version of the system please.

Subject: Why one might save bitmap files as EPS
EPS files print more easily on imagesetters (those 1270/2540, etc.
dpi things that output on paper or film). Also, the EPS files can be
resized more accurately, even if the original was a bitmap (scanned
image). If you resize TIFF files at the wrong percentages, you may
get a moire pattern.-Pete Tamas

Subject: X11R5 server(s) for the Macintosh (Q)
I have been having a play with the MacX 1.2 X server for the macintosh.
However it (at least, this version) is an X11R4 server, and we are
looking at moving our systems to X11R5.
Can anyone:
* Say if they have heard any rumours of a future version of MacX supporting
X11R5 in the not too distant future?
* Tell me if there are any reasonable (price, speed, etc.) alternatives to
MacX that are X11R5 servers? (I have only heard of Exodus, and don't
know whether it is X11R4 or X11R5)
Thanks in advance,
